- Homebrew complements macOS (or your Linux system). Install your RubyGems with gem and their dependencies with brew. “To install, drag this icon” no more. Homebrew Cask installs macOS apps, fonts and plugins and other non-open source software. $ brew install -cask firefox. Making a cask is as simple as creating a formula.
- Brew install homebrew/fuse/ntfs-3g Replacing MountNTFS. To get NTFS-3G to work, we need to replace the built-in /sbin/mountntfs binary, which is linked to Apple's NTFS driver, with NTFS-3G's mountntfs. This was a pretty easy thing to do before OS X 10.11 El Capitan, but due to System Integrity Protection, it is now slightly harder.

What is homebrew and why use it
For Mac running on macOS later than 10.10 El Captain, users can use Homebrew to simplify the process of installing command line software like cask, htop, etc and open-source packages including libdvdcss on a Mac. Before you start to download libdvdcss on Mac for Handbrake, you will need to install Homebrew with a few Terminal commands. After installing homebrew's openssh on El Capitan, ssh-agent no longer seemed to work (in the sense that after using ssh-add to cache a passphrase, I still got a system prompt when trying to ssh). This seemed to be fixed by the instructions I found at the url below (my version is functionally the same but uses PlistBuddy to edit the plist).
To quote from their website:
Homebrew is the missing package manager for OS X:
- easy to install
- does not need administrator privileges
- installs packages to their own directory and then symlinks their files into /usr/local
For further information to install it and how to use it, see the Homebrew website and the Wiki.
Homebrew El Capitan System
The formulas to install programs are called recipes and they make it possible to install several version of the same program (as well as HEAD of different Version Control Systems) at the same time which can then be symlinked. This makes it perfect for the purpose of installing the master branch of GRASS GIS for testing purposes.
GRASS GIS 7.8 and later
Homebrew El Capitan Mod
There is an osgeo4mac which contains recipes for GRASS GIS 7.x and other GIS tools - highly recommendable tap!

Homebrew El Capitan Download
you can run GRASS GIS tests but they are not implemented as they should be - work in progress.
Starting it:
GRASS GIS 7.2 LTS
OSGEO4mac has also a formalar to install the GRASS GIS 7 LTS.
Follow the procedure as described in section GRASS GIS 7.6+ but use
GRASS GIS 7.0.x for El Capitan without disabling SIP
Homebrew Osx El Capitan
Homebrew El Capitan Install
The new homebrew recipe for GRASS 7.0 does install on El Capitan with SIP enabled! This is thanks to Larry Shaffer. Seehttps://github.com/OSGeo/homebrew-osgeo4mac/issues/118#issuecomment-200278686
The recipe is part of the Homebrew-osgeo4mac tap, see
for info on how to use them.
